Self-Care for Teachers

self-care-tips-for-teachers

As a teacher, it’s very easy to put everyone else first.  Throw in being a mom, and you’re just trying to stay afloat.  This can only last for so long until you sink to the bottom.  It’s important to take time out for yourself. It’s even more important not to feel guilty about it. Remember, it is not selfish to refill your own cup so you can pour it into others. 1. Get More Sleep

Get more sleep self-care tip

I know we hear this a lot but most people don’t realize how important sleep is.  Lack of sleep can start your day off on the wrong foot.  On the other hand, a good night’s rest can leave you feeling energized, positive, and ready to have a productive day.  Most people get less sleep each night than they need.  When was the last time you woke up feeling refreshed instead of tired?  Self-care for teachers can be a simple as getting more shut-eye each night. Make sleep a priority by scheduling it into your day.  Try setting an alarm at night to start winding down.  Turn screens off, dim the lights, and do something relaxing.  This will help you fall into a deeper sleep more quickly.

2. Drink Lots of Water

Drink lots of water self-care tip

Everyone should drink lots of water throughout the day, but especially teachers.  The constant talking and structured schedule can lead to a dry mouth.  Sometimes we are so busy we just forget to drink water until we sit down at our desk at the end of the day.  Anyone else been there?

Start by drinking lots of water when you first wake up because our bodies get dehydrated while we sleep.  Then bring a large bottle or 2 smaller bottles of water to keep in the classroom.  Keeping two bottles in different spots is handy since teachers move around the room so much throughout the day.  Of course, after drinking all that water use your prep, lunch, and any extra breaks to hit the bathroom! Here’s my favorite glass water bottle.

3. Eat Vibrantly

Eat healthy self-care tip

We know the importance of eating healthy, but sometimes we don’t eat vibrantly.  What does that mean?  We need to eat foods that nourish our bodies, give us fuel, and make us feel better. Once you start eating fresh quality food, your body will thank you and you will notice positive changes.  Try some time-saving strategies: meal prep one day of the week, eat a lot of raw fruits and vegetables that require little or no prep, batch cook and freeze food for later.  I highly recommend the Instant Pot. It saves time, energy, and makes meals so much easier. Also check out my blog post, Easy No-Cook Breakfast Ideas, for those busy mornings.

4. Schedule Time for Yourself

Schedule time for yourself self-care tip

As a teacher and new mama, I had a habit of putting everyone else first.  I was so exhausted, cranky, and unproductive. There was no energy left to focus on things I wanted to do.  It’s important to schedule time each and every day to recharge your batteries.  Choose a time that works best for you and do something that brings you joy and fills you up.  Some ideas you might want to try: go for a walk, exercise, do yoga or meditation, listen to a podcast, read a good book, relax with a hot cup of coffee/tea, or meet up with a friend. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup so take care of yourself first.

5. Live in the Moment

Live in the moment self-care tip

Self-care for teachers starts with living in the moment. When we live in the past or the future it can cause unwanted stress and anxiety.  But living in the present and enjoying the moment can give us a greater appreciation.  Try to block out the distractions around you and focus on what you are doing or who you are with.  Instead of thinking about cooking dinner, doing laundry, or checking your phone be present with your loved ones and have fun in the moment.  Instead of thinking about all the papers you have to grade or lesson planning, live in the moment with your students.  This simple thing can lead to greater happiness.  Live in the moment and enjoy every second!
